Bengt Magnussen, Commercial Director of TALO, was invited to present the case for timber offsite manufacturing for low rise housing at a Round Table event on the theme of factory-built homes.
This event was hosted by iB Architects with whom TALO has collaborated with previously. The debate looked at how MMC and factory-built housing can be a viable alternative to traditional construction and why it is so needed.
Bengt shared his unique perspective on the extensive use of timber offsite technology in Norway and Finland – where the systems TALO is bringing to the UK have been used to build over 30,000 homes to date and in some of the harshest conditions on the planet.
Commenting on the future of factory built housing, Bengt said, “What really matters are the outcomes that can be achieved, regardless of the build methodology. And if MMC cannot out-perform the rest of the market – then why bother?”
“We believe that MMC can be hugely powerful if it addresses the genuine challenges facing housebuilders, developers and social housing providers – the delivery of new housing that is cheaper, faster, higher quality and most importantly, that exceeds Passivhaus energy standards, as standard.”
He added, “Huge thanks to Ian Blake and his team for putting together a really interesting debate and discussion. It was great to take part and to help to spread the word about the vast potential of offsite manufacturing, particularly when combined with outstanding architecture and design.”
TALO has previously collaborated with iB Architects on a housing scheme in the South East of England which allowed their team to develop a really good understanding of the TALO offsite system and how it works on site.
According to Ian Blake, Director at iB Architects, “Our experience of working with the TALO system is very positive. Having looked at other factory-built systems, we have been unable to find another that is comparable.”
“The TALO ethos of sustainable forest to factory in a single day and then just a week on site, whilst mitigating against the ingress of moisture during construction, and delivering a high performance zero snag product is admirable and hugely aspirational.”
“This is a completely flexible and bespoke product that enables a wide variety of architectural designs to be delivered, with few of the compromises that other offsite manufactured housebuilding systems are challenged by. This makes TALO’s solutions an incredibly attractive proposition.”
