How to Build Zero Energy Homes

A zero energy housing development built by TALO in Chesterfield using a solar package to power hot water and underfloor heating

To build genuinely zero energy homes cost effectively, there are a number of factors that have to be taken into consideration and designed into every project.

One of the key differentiators for TALO is that we don’t look at the thermal efficiency of the timber superstructure in isolation.

The energy strategy for homes built by TALO removes the need for costly ground or air source heat pumps and energy-intensive gas boilers.

Instead, electricity, hot water and electric underfloor heating are powered by battery storage from solar panels and combined with MVHR (mechanical ventilation and heat recovery).

This strategy – together with the exceptional thermal performance of TALO’s timber structure, low energy doors and triple glazed windows – completely removes the need for energy bills, exceeds Passivhaus energy standards and at no cost premium.

Pictured is the 360 zero energy housing development built by Strata Homes in Chesterfield using TALO's advanced timber superstructure, which used this energy strategy.
